Former Customs/Temple Sutton member Frank Gulley died on Saturday 3 February 2024 at the age of 76 after a long illness. The funeral was held at 2pm on Tuesday 12 March at Southend Crematorium.

Southend Chess Club have announced that their long standing member Bill Bremner passed away on Tuesday 5 December 2023 at the age of 91. The funeral was held at 3.40pm on Friday 8 March at Southend Crematorium.

Mike Twyble, a Southend club member from 1976-2000, died on Monday 12 December at the age of 58, following a two year battle with cancer.
The funeral was on Monday 21 December at North Devon Crematorium, Old Torrington Road, Barnstaple, EX31 3NW.

14/08/2021The League is now back with a slimmed down list of activities. Fixtures have been added for Division 1 and Minor, but there will be no Perriman Cup or Senior Individual competitions this year.
30/06/2021The League Council Meeting has decided that the 2019/20 Division 1 and Minor competitions are to be awarded to the team with the highest points per match ratio. This means that there will be a play-off between Southend I and Basildon I for the Division 1 title and that Temple Sutton are winners of the Minor competition.

Thurrock Chess Club have announced that Frank Sealey died in hospital on Wednesday 8 April after an illness at the age of 72. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the Thurrock club.

Thurrock Chess Club have announced that John Ellis passed away at the age of 68 on Wednesday 22 January.
The funeral was held at Herongate Wood, Billericay Road, Brentwood on Friday 14 February.

Basildon Chess Club have announced that Ken Laundy passed away on Saturday 21 September 2019 aged 81 years after being ill for some time.
A service to commemorate Ken's life took place on Monday 7 October 2019 at Basildon & District Crematorium.

Billericay Chess Club have announced the very sad news that Jeff Goodwin died of a heart attack at home on Wednesday 5th June 2019. He was 69 years of age. Everyone who knew Jeff will know that he was a real character and a strong chess player in both classical and quicker formats of the game. He will be sadly missed by everyone at the club.
The funeral was on Monday 1st July at South Essex Crematorium.

26/03/2018Roger Mugridge 1934 - 2018
Billericay Chess Club have announced the death of Roger Mugridge, a long time member of Wickford and Billericay Chess Clubs as well as being Vice President of the League. Roger died on Friday 16th March 2018 in Basildon Hospital of a heart attack after being housebound with a broken hip for several years. Besides playing for his two clubs, Roger played in the North Essex daytime competition and the Southend Congress before illness restricted his play to his home. He will be missed. The funeral service was held at Basildon & District Crematorium on Friday 6th April.

Thurrock Chess Club have announced that Terry Field passed away at the age of 75 on Tuesday 13 February. The funeral was held at Basildon Crematorium on Thursday 8th March.

Thurrock Chess Club have announced that Ron Prickett passed away at the age of 81 on Friday 26 January. The funeral was held at Corbetts Tey Crematorium, Ockendon Road, Upminster, RM14 2UY on 26th February.

08/09/2017Hugh Tanton 1930 - 2017
Billericay Chess Club have announced the sad news that Hugh Tanton passed away on 14th August 2017 at the age of 86 following a serious heart condition.
Hugh was a long time member of Billericay Chess Club. He joined in 1989 and was the club’s Tournaments Officer for many years. Hugh was also a member of the county U120 team and the North Essex Daytime Competition from its first year until 2015. In his latter years, after he stopped driving, he continued to play chess at home against members of the Daytime league and Billericay Chess Club until this year. Hugh will be sadly missed by all at the club. The funeral took place at St John’s Church, Outwood Common Rd, Billericay CM11 2LE on 24th October.

Westcliff Chess Club have announced that Maurice Siegel passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday 1 September. He died of a heart attack whilst in hospital.
The funeral took place in Waltham Abbey on 8th September.

The League's longest current unbeaten run has come to an end. John Moore went 36 games unbeaten between February 2007 and April 2010 before losing tonight.
According to my records, which are complete back to 1992, this is the longest unbeaten run. Previously the record was 30 games - held by Dennis Paul for games played in 1992-3 and John Moore for games played in 1996-2000.

Wickford Chess Club have announced that David Hutchings passed away on Tuesday 1 August. He had been ill for several months, he was 64. The funeral took place at Basildon Crematorium on Tuesday 8 August.
